WHY WATER RUNNING?

I found more people were being referred to me as a result of running injuries. Training overload is an all too common problem which can be addressed by incorporating water running within training programs.

The benefits of water running for elite athletes are that you can work at high intensity at a level not able to be achieved on land. Strength work ensures you work hard but without the same impact on joints.

Incorporating water running training for your special event whether it's your first 5km run, a triathlon or even an ultra marathon is a key element to helping you to stay injury free.

Water running is a unique way to improve fitness & mobility issues,

pre & post operation rehab, as well as staying fit and active whilst aging.

Most work is in the deep water so specific programs benefit weight loss clients as well as athletes

GREAT BRITAIN distance runner, Jo Pavey, tore her calf muscle three months before the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, all seemed lost. But a regime of aqua running returned her to the track three weeks before she was due to compete, salvaging her dream of taking part in the 5000 metres. "There was no way I would have made it to the start line without aqua running," says Pavey. "In many ways it got me even fitter."

Deep water or pool running involves running in deep water with the aid of a pool noodle or aqua belt to keep you afloat. A considerable number of professional athletes — from half marathon world record holder Lornah Kiplagat to Commonwealth Games medallist Andrea Miller — include pool running in their training as a means of overcoming injury and improving fitness.

"I train in the pool twice a week all year round, mostly for speed work," says Miller who represented New Zealand at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. "I also use the pool for fitness maintenance when injured and to recover post competition."
