WHY WATER RUNNING
Deep water running is the perfect complementary training to road/trail/ track running, pushing the body's boundaries and improving overall fitness and strength. It is also a great tool to regain fitness and movement after surgery, hip and knee injuries or really, just a good first go at getting back in shape at any age.
It's beneficial to challenge the body in different ways.
Every time you take a step when you run, you load your joints by two to three times your body weight — deep water running eliminates that joint loading. It's basically a different way of doing the same thing. By adding a weekly session to your training, you get a quality workout without overstressing joints. Deep water running can increase your range of motion like normal running, without the pounding. It's great for anyone who suffers from arthritis, or who is recovering from knee or hip surgery. If you’re in the latter stages of pregnancy and not able to run on the road you may still be able to run in the pool (check with your GP first).
All you need to do is to learn the correct technique from a qualified instructor, and if needed the use of buoyancy will allow you to run comfortably with your head out of the water. This enables proper breathing and posture, which enhances the ability to promote great running technique and form.
Once engaged in water running, your body will be less exposed to the negative aspects of repetitive loading found on land, while at the same time experiencing positive gains in your fitness. Water is 773 times more resistant than air, which serves to boost all key running muscles, increasing your land running turnover and stride length. Pool based exercise is isokinetic, meaning you can work as hard or as easy as you like, increasing or decreasing intensity simply by changing the speed of your movements.
